Is ceramic-coated drinkware actually safe?

I've spent ten years in supply chains. Here's how I actually think about this question.

I get asked this a lot, and I want to be upfront about something before I answer it: I'm not a chemist. I'm not a lab tech. What I am is someone who spent the better part of a decade in logistics and cross-border e-commerce, looking at supplier documentation, manufacturing specs, and quality control reports for a living — long before I ever started a drinkware brand. So when I read a "ceramic coated tumbler" listing, I'm not reading it as a customer. I'm reading it the way I used to read a factory audit.

And honestly? Most of what's circulating about ceramic drinkware safety right now is a mess of two completely different issues being talked about as if they're one issue. Let me untangle it the way I'd untangle a supplier problem.

Issue one: the base seal. Issue two: the inner wall. Not the same thing.

The recent lead scare around a popular tumbler brand was about the base seal — the spot where the inner and outer steel walls get joined during manufacturing. That's a specific manufacturing step, with a specific known failure mode (lead-based solder), and it has nothing to do with the part of the cup your mouth or your drink ever touches. I bring this up first because in my old job, half the work was figuring out which part of a spec sheet actually mattered and which part was noise. This is a case where the internet collapsed two separate manufacturing questions into one panic. The base seal issue is real. It's also irrelevant to whether a ceramic inner wall is safe. Different part of the product, different process, different risk.

The question I actually ask: is it fired, and will they tell you?

Here's where my logistics brain kicks in. Brands describe ceramic interiors in a dozen different ways — ceramic coated, ceramic lined, glazed, enamel — and most of those words are chosen by a marketing team, not a process engineer. I've stopped treating the terminology as the signal. What I ask instead is what actually happens on the production line.

A ceramic interior is applied to the steel and then fired at high temperature. That firing step is the part that matters: it's what turns a wet applied layer into a hardened, chemically inert ceramic surface. A finish that's applied and simply dried is a different thing entirely, and it behaves differently over months of hot liquid, dishwasher cycles, and scrubbing. When I'm evaluating a supplier, "is it fired, and at what temperature" is a question with a real answer. "Is it premium ceramic technology" isn't.

That's how our own RE³™ interior is made — a ceramic coating applied to the inner wall and then fired at high temperature. I'm not going to pretend that sounds exciting; it's a manufacturing process detail, not a tagline. But it's a question you can ask any brand, and the answer tells you more than the adjective on the listing does. And the honest tradeoff, since I'd rather say it than have you find out: any coating can chip under a hard enough drop. Bare steel can't. That's a real durability difference, and it's the reason I don't tell people ceramic is the right answer for every use case.

What I won't do in this post

I'm not going to hand you a number with no methodology behind it and call that proof. That kind of claim is exactly what used to drive me crazy reviewing supplier documentation for a living — if I can't see the test conditions, the number means nothing to me, and it shouldn't mean anything to you either.

What I will say plainly: the materials are food-grade and BPA-free, and they're tested under SGS RoHS requirements for restricted substances, report number CZXHL26000628401, which you can verify against the SGS database yourself rather than take my word for it. Our certifications page has the documents. That's the claim I'll stand behind, and the standard I'd hold any other brand to.

Two adjacent questions come up constantly alongside this one, and they each deserve their own answer rather than a line in this post: whether stainless steel itself is safe to drink from, and where PFAS actually turn up in a tumbler — which, for what it's worth, is almost never the ceramic or the steel.

My actual checklist — for any brand, not just mine

If you want to vet a drinkware brand the way I'd vet a supplier before signing a PO, here's what I'd actually check:

Will they tell you plainly what the interior surface is, and whether it's fired — or does the listing only offer adjectives?
Can you click through to an actual lab report with a number you can verify, or is it just a logo image with no document attached?
Does it explicitly say BPA-free, and does that cover the lid and gasket, not just the body?
For double-wall steel bottles, has the brand actually addressed the base-seal question, or gone quiet on it?

If a brand can't answer those four questions in plain language, that tells you something. It told me something, ten years ago, sitting across from suppliers who couldn't either.

Bottom line

I didn't get into this business because I love drinkware. I got into it because I spent a decade reading specs and reports for other people's products, and I figured I'd rather build something I could actually stand behind when someone asks me a question like this one.

A ceramic interior is safe when it's food-grade, properly fired, and backed by testing you can look up yourself. Those are checkable facts, not adjectives — and a brand that won't give you the checkable version is answering the question whether it means to or not.
