Most of the damage I've seen people do to ceramic linings wasn't from using it wrong. It was from cleaning it too aggressively.
Rinse and hand-wash with mild soap after every use. Once a week, run a baking soda paste or vinegar soak on any staining. Never use bleach — it attacks the glaze, not just the stain. Skip the dishwasher for anything insulated; the heat cycle is harder on the lid seal than on the ceramic itself. The lining isn't fragile, but it isn't bulletproof either, and most of the damage I've seen people cause came from over-correcting for stains that a soft sponge would've handled fine.
A reader emailed me last week about a tea ring that wouldn't budge from their tumbler, asking if it was safe to just hit it with bleach and be done with it. I get why people reach for the strongest thing in the cabinet — a stubborn stain feels like it should require a stubborn solution. It doesn't, and bleach is the one thing on this list I'd genuinely tell you not to use, for reasons that have nothing to do with how tough the stain is.
There's dental materials research on this that's more useful than you'd expect, even though it's studying ceramic crowns, not tumblers. A 2023 study in Applied Sciences tracked how coffee staining behaves on lithium disilicate ceramic surfaces and found the mechanism comes down to surface roughness: rougher surfaces give pigment more places to grab onto, smoother and more uniformly glazed surfaces give it almost nothing to hold. That's the same physics at work in a fused ceramic tumbler wall — it's not that the surface repels coffee and tea, it's that there isn't much texture for the residue to bond with in the first place.
Which is also why "low staining" gets misread as "doesn't need cleaning." It does. A smooth surface resists staining better, but residue still sits there until you rinse it off, and if you let it sit long enough — days, not hours — it'll eventually find something to bond with anyway.
Daily: rinse with water right after you finish, then a quick wash with warm water and mild dish soap. That's the entire routine for 90% of use cases. If you do this consistently, you'll basically never need the next step.
Weekly, or whenever you notice staining: baking soda paste — a spoonful mixed with a little water, worked in with a soft sponge, left for a few minutes, then rinsed. For anything more stubborn, an equal-parts vinegar and warm water soak for 20–30 minutes does the rest. Both are mild enough to use weekly without thinking twice about it.
I keep telling people this and it still doesn't land for everyone: the soda paste is a mild abrasive, and that's exactly why it works without scratching anything — it's gentle enough to lift residue off a smooth surface without giving it new texture to grab onto on the way out.
Bleach. This is the one I'd actually stop someone from doing. Bleach is formulated to break down organic stains aggressively, and on a glazed surface that means it can attack the glaze finish along with the stain, leaving the surface duller and, ironically, more prone to staining next time — you've traded a visible problem for a structural one.
Metal scrubbers and steel wool. Same logic as the glaze-roughness research above, just in reverse: scratch the surface and you've manufactured new places for pigment to bond. A surface that started out resisting stains can end up holding onto them worse than before, purely because of what you scrubbed it with.
Thermal shock. Pulling a tumbler straight from the fridge and filling it with boiling water, or vice versa, stresses the glaze in a way daily temperature swings don't. Ceramic and glaze don't expand and contract at identical rates, and a sudden jump is when that mismatch shows up as a hairline crack.
The dishwasher, for insulated tumblers specifically. The ceramic itself usually survives the heat fine. What doesn't always survive is the lid mechanism and the seal — high-heat cycles and the direct spray from the heating element are harder on gaskets and locking parts than on glaze. If your specific tumbler is explicitly labeled dishwasher-safe, that's the manufacturer's call to make. If it isn't labeled that way, hand-washing isn't a chore so much as it's the thing standing between you and a lid that doesn't seal right anymore.

A glazed ceramic lining genuinely resists stains better than bare steel. It doesn't run on autopilot, and the few mistakes that actually hurt it — bleach, metal scrubbers, thermal extremes — are all things people reach for trying to clean too hard, not too little.
