In January 2024, consumers using at-home lead-testing kits on Stanley Quencher tumblers began posting positive results on social media. Stanley's parent company, Pacific Market International (PMI), confirmed the underlying fact: a lead-based pellet is used to seal the vacuum insulation point at the base of the tumbler, covered by a layer of stainless steel.
By late February 2024, that confirmation had turned into litigation. Lawsuits were filed against PMI in Washington, Nevada, and California, arguing the company should have disclosed the lead pellet's presence sooner. The suits sought reimbursement for consumers and alleged that damage to the vacuum seal could expose users to lead. PMI's position throughout was that the pellet sits in a sealed cavity that does not contact the beverage under normal use, and that any damaged unit would be covered under its lifetime warranty.
In April 2026, U.S. District Judge Tana Lin dismissed the proposed class action against PMI, ruling that plaintiffs had not demonstrated a "specific and plausible risk of harm" from normal use of the tumblers. The court's reasoning centered on the sealed, non-contact location of the pellet rather than a finding that lead in consumer products is categorically safe.
Yeti is frequently mentioned in the same breath as Stanley in coverage of this topic, and the underlying construction is genuinely similar. Yeti's own website FAQ confirms its Rambler drinkware uses a lead soldering pellet in the sealing process; when Wired contacted the company for comment in February 2024, Yeti did not respond. Independent testing of a Yeti cup separately found no detectable lead on either the interior or exterior surface, and no detectable BPA. No lawsuit against Yeti over this issue turned up in the reporting available at the time of writing. The two brands share a manufacturing detail; they have not shared a legal outcome.
The wider field splits roughly down the middle. Wired's February 2024 survey of major reusable bottle brands found Owala, Hydro Flask (since 2013), Klean Kanteen, and Sigg all confirmed lead-free sealing methods — Klean Kanteen uses a noncrystalline silica bead instead of solder, and Hydro Flask developed a proprietary sealant called TempShield. MiiR and LifeStraw confirmed they do use a lead-containing pellet, similar to Stanley and Yeti, while S'well, HydroJug, and Greens Steel did not respond to requests for comment.
Two years on, the practical state of things is this: a manufacturing practice that was once treated as an industry default is now something brands disclose, defend, or design around, depending on who's asking. Some competitors have moved to lead-free sealing methods and made a selling point of it. Others, including PMI, have maintained their existing process while pointing to its sealed, non-contact design. The court's dismissal settles the legal question for this specific case. It doesn't settle the larger one consumers were actually asking in 2024 — whether a sealed component should be disclosed at all, regardless of whether it's reachable in normal use.
